Prevention and promotion of awareness
The Foundation is particularly interested in the prevention aspect which is as important as maintaining their essential services. Consequently, the Foundation allows a significant part of its budget to inform the public on ways to prevent blindness. The Foundation publishes and distributes pamphlets to this effect, answers hundreds of telephone calls and directs many to eye specialists in order for them to get the necessary care to protect their eyesight.
As part of this awareness program, the Québec Foundation for the Blind visits elementary and secondary schools to teach and inform students on the realities of living with this handicap, emphasizing that visually impaired people can lead a normal and productive life, if we give them the necessary tools.
The Foundation is looking into the adaptation of new technologies; these could offer the visually impaired person new possibilities. It financially supports activities in this field and makes sure the information circulates. The services of an expert in accessibility have been retained to ensure their web site is in accordance with these standards.
